Math and Science in English. This is actually not a new topic to discuss about but somehow, recently, this bunch of, so called 'cendekiawan' (intellectual of Malaysia), voice out the issue of learning this subject in English. They said, it should be done in Malay language as in the past as putting this subject in English cause a lot of people to suffer, not only the student but even the teachers. They even submit a police report against the Minister of Education on this matter.
For me, this issue should be discussed again as it involve a lot of parties and a lot of people's view. This topic is debatable and furthermore, we can say that only the one who is not gaining any benefits from this teaching are the only one arguing.
I still remember the time when i was learning everything in Malay back in my school days and i can say, it was interesting as i understand every little bit of the explanation but when i move into University life, some of the teachings/subjects become English. I do have complains about it but at the end, i know the importance of teaching these subjects in English. So, i carry on without much complain and i would say my English improved a lot but not the an extend where my grammer as well my vocab is categorized as perfect. Although i can say the transition from Bahasa Melayu teaching to English teaching is difficult, yet, its not impossible and this of course has to be done. The more we stick to our mother toungue on certain subjects, the more we will be left behind. World is progressing under one rule and one law, and language barrier is certainly no exception. Since most of the books to study Math and Science are in English, might as well we teach those subjects in English then rather then we need to translate it each time we do some reading which involve international books.
Most of us faced this issue before, and we know, its our best interest to know these subjects in English rather then in BM. We also know that, learning it at first is not an easy task. We might need more hard work, need more sweat, need more knowledge but in the end, its only us to gain all that. Because of this, most of us are voicing our opinion on this matter and most of them that i read, agree that these subjects should be taught in English but, there are surely a party spoiler but in this case, there are many but those i see are people who either pro the Malay Language or the one struggling in English. This are so obvious.
For those who said they are facing problem with this method, well, i think they should be thinking about how to learn it instead of how to avoid it. I was laughing all the way when they said, even the teachers having problem teaching student these subjects in English but then still accept the allowance given to them for this afford without much complain. What the crab. If i'm the Minister of Education, i would just fire all those people who said so because i know these are bunch of people who are going to pull down our goal to move forward with the world.......but luckily for them, I'm not the Minister.....kekekeke.
Well, bottom line is, we need to do whatever necessary to move forward and some of us already manage to see it and i tribute this to our Tun Dr. Mahathir, our ex-prime minister of Malaysia. He able to see whats coming and i bet, he knows where we will end up if this so called, 'Cendekiawan' still hanging around in our back yard. I would hope that someday, the one who oppose to this topic would come to realise that to progress ahead does not mean only sticking to Bahasa Melayu language alone, but to be flexible enough to adapt to change. Write this down on a piece of paper, burn it and let them drink this in........kekekeke......
