People's mind has no end to the knowledge of what we want to learn. Basically the sky is only the limit and these words are true but only to those who understand it persist to make a sense out of it. Seems some of these words of wisdom do not go into some people's understanding especially the one handling our country's education. This is quite sad to know but nonetheless, what can we do about it.
Recently, if you all might have heard, our local government is planning to limit the subjects taken in the SPM exam, the exam equivalent to the British GCSE. Although its still subject to change but raising this topic was not suppose to happen at all in the first place. With all these students, brilliant students, should i say, there should not be a limit to whether a student might be a burden taking in more subjects then they should have. Excuses given by the government are not really concrete enough to give away this kind of policy. Reason given are as below:
1) "Records show that some 90% of students sitting for the SPM take 10 or fewer subjects. We want to streamline this as this would also be an easier way to determine the awarding of scholarships"
2) "Teachers would also be able to give more focus if students were only allowed to take up to 10 subjects"
3) "Parents would not have to rush their children for tuition classes if they took too many subjects."
4) "Teachers to better equip themselves (as they would not be burdened teaching other subjects)"
The above excuses were given to the press but i assume, they did consider many other factors as well but to mentioned the above, meaning they consider this to be the biggest factor in determining the decision on whether to limit the subjects taken or otherwise.
From what I see, those excuses are a mere excuses and no more then that. I don't feel that this excuses are enough to suppress the benefits a student can gain by getting in more subjects as they could.
This topic was brought up when people start to question the unfairness of the scholarship not given out to people who deserve it, who obtain more A's then the people who got the scholarship. So, why does the government need to punish the student instead of looking into the way to overcome unfairness inside their judistriction. Surely they can do something better then saying, limit the brain from growing right?
All the excuses given by the government above could easily scoff off if we wanted to because its a mere excuses to blind certain people in handling their incompetence but then again, most people decided to keep low profile in order to save their own skin. For me, i rather say it out loud then let it burn inside myself.
Bear in mind one thing, student have all the rights to take how many subjects they think they are capable of like the right of eating 'nasi lemak' or just white rice today. Some student stand out among the crowd but this does not mean they wanted to show of. Sometime they just want to push themselves a little bit more and thus this minority appear inside the so called, record which show 90% of students taking less the 10 subjects. We can even see that most of the students who taken more then 10 subjects prevail in their own way without burdening their parent or teachers. None of those parties ever complaint but for some who did, you can check that they are not the one involved in that particular students up-growing. They a just merely a by-stander's view. So, the excuse, burdening the parent of the children that are taking in more subjects then they should have should not be awaken at all. Parent have brains as well, if the government notice that, to have their children taking in a lot of subjects of course has taken a lot of consideration out of their own rational thinking. This burden might be what they want in the first place but seems the government overlook that perhaps.
Teachers can give more focus on student if less then 10 subjects? Are they saying teacher cannot focus more if more subjects are taken by students? Is the teacher so incompetent nowadays? I don't think so!!! Teachers will still teach 3 subjects if they are ordered to, not because the student are taking in more papers but merely because they should do multitasking. Are we saying that if a doctor handling more patients then they should have, we should limit the patients attendance to a doctor? Noooooo. You should increase the number of doctors like what the government is doing now but how come they can overlook on the education part.
Believe me, i can go on and on on this matter but I just want to say that, the government is looking at the wrong side of the story and blaming the innocents for the incompetence of certain quarters in doing their work. They should consider
more ground rather then having it limit our child brain. If this is to continue, i won't be surprise a lot of people migrating their children oversea just to fulfill their children capability where local facility are unable to do so.
Think about it..........
